Featured communities
Capacity Development is a professional community of practice on Ning (a social
networking platform). Hosted by the World Bank Institute, the community currently has close to
700 members.
Capacity Development aims to unite a community of practitioners and experts
to encourage discussion on capacity development practice and results and the sharing of
related resources and experiences. The community is open to new members and includes practitioners
engaged or interested in capacity development in several contexts, such strategy, planning,
diagnostics, programme design, monitoring and evaluation, and systematic learning about what
works.
The
Learning Network on Capacity Development (LenCD) is an informal network of analysts and
practitioners aimed at creating a global community of practice around capacity development. Its
objectives are to facilitate the sharing of lessons and distill quality criteria for good practice;
promote research, share experiences, monitor outcomes and carry out other empirical work; foster
country-level, regional and international dialogue and collaboration; promote the mainstreaming of
capacity development issues into agency operations; and act as a key partner to advance the
OECD/DAC’s capacity development agenda.

European Commission re-thinks its capacity development approach, post-Busan
18/04/12
The European Commission is exploring ways to reorient its technical cooperation approach in
line with the outcome of the 4th High Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness in Busan, which underscored
the links between capacity development and development effectiveness. Building on the principles of
the Technical Cooperation Reform (backbone strategy) and the lessons which have been learnt after
two years of implementation, the Commission is currently updating its guidance on capacity
development to integrate it into its overall Project and Programme Cycle Management guidance
(PPCM).

Learning for sustainable development at Rio+20 (vote for your favourite courses!)

At the June 2012 UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD) - commonly referred to as
the Rio+20 conference - there will be a parallel Sustainable Development (SD) Learning event taking
place, consisting of multiple training courses on crucial aspects of sustainable development.
70 courses
grouped under 12 broad SD themes will be offered. The courses aim at providing participants with
practical knowledge and hands-on training from experts around the world.
In preparation for the event, the UNCSD Secretariat invites interested parties around the world to review the proposed courses and vote on their favourites! The voting deadline is 13 April 2012.

Farm Radio International has released three reports - available in English and French - of
practical experience so far in applying a participatory radio campaigns (PRCs) methodology
developed by the African Farm Radio Research Initiative (AFRRI). The first report provides an
overview of the PRC methodology. The second report examines the effectiveness of radio-based market
information services (MIS) for smallholder agriculture. The last report presents results from
integrating newer information and communication technologies with radio to create more effective
farm radio programmes.

The Pelican Initiative: 'Learning for development: we can do better'!
Launched in March 2005, the Platform for Evidence-based Learning and Communications for Social Change (Pelican Initiative) is an active learning network bringing together more than 400 evaluation and learning specialists, development practitioners, policymakers and researchers. The network is an initiative of several international organizations including the European Centre for Development policy Management (ECDPM); International Development Research Centre (IDRC) Canada; Exchange; Bellanet;and the Unicef East Africa Regional Office. Membership is open to all development practitioners, specialists and policy makers interested in the issue of learning for development.
P4cd offers an online platform (www.partners4cd.net) to facilitate
networking between rural communities in Africa -- a common meeting space for the rural development
professionals who serve them. The set of web 2.0 tools available to members enables
knowledge-sharing between individuals and groups in areas of Agriculture & Environment, Public
Health & Sanitation, SMEs & Cooperatives, Development Management and Technology for
Development. P4cd partners with training institutions , international organizations, government
agencies and NGOs active in the wholesale creation of development knowledge. It acts as a
non-profit, online retailer of peer-based and self-paced learning products to further extend the
reach and audience of its partners, and thereby serve the needs of a broad ranging and fast growing
rural audience in Africa.
