This paper - presented at the 2000 African Development Forum - assesses the demands made by the HIV/AIDS pandemic on leadership in Africa, and examines the vision, commitment and leadership needed to combat it, which include, openness, tolerance, and readiness to change. Although some remarkable progress has already been made, much still remains to be done.
