Association for Women's Rights in Development

The Assocation of Women's Rights in Development is an international membership organization connecting, informing and mobilizing people and organizations committed to achieving gender equality, sustainable development and women's human rights.


Founded in 1982, the organisation currently has 5000 members that together aim to cause policy, institutional and individual change that will improve the lives of women and girls everywhere.

Through its Young Women and Leadership Programme, AWID hopes to promote a rights agenda by and for your women around the world. Elements of the programme include:

  • Young Women and Leadership Email list - providing a space to connect and share ideas
  • Mentorship Program - an e-programme to facilitate a process for participants to share skills, experiences and networks with their peers from different contexts as well as women with different levels of experience.
  • Young Women and Leadership Glossary - an on-line tool with accessible information about key terms related generally to women's human rights and gender and development work, with more specific definitions for AWID's thematic areas.
  • Young Women and Leadership Institutes - a space to build young women's capacity to strategically work towards women's rights in their regions and globally.
