Training Institute - Desmond Tutu Peace Centre

The Desmond Tutu Peace Centre in Cape Town (South Africa) aims to nurture peace by promoting ethical, visionary, values-based human development. The Centre offers an Emerging Leadership Programme, a Women in Leadership Programme and is partnering with the University of Pretoria, the University of the Western Cape and the University of Dar es Salaam to establish a collaborative Chair in Leadership and Future Studies.

The Emerging Leadership Programmes aims to:

  • be co-facilitators with young emerging leaders in creating spaces for values-based youth development, leadership and peace building.
  • deliver a unique, South Africa- inspired worldwide programme to emerging leaders between 15 and 20 years of age
  • facilitate a programme and curriculum that will develop the consciousness of youth and their involvement in spheres of social justice.
  • grow the capacity of young people that will foster peace building and reconciliation.
  • recognize and reward the achievements of young leaders who have demonstrated outstanding and sustained commitment to peace building in their community.
  • build a network of alumni who will, in turn, mentor and bridge support of leadership for the following generation of emerging leaders.

The Women in Leadership Programme conosists of a four day course, that is attended by 25 women from diverse backgrounds, occupying positions of leadership in the community, in business, in the civil service and in academia. A two-day follow-up course is conducted six months after the first course. This provides women with the opportunity to discuss how they have grown in their leadership roles following the initial course and to review the programme’s learning.
