Charismatic Leadership and Second-Line Leaders in Development NGOs

Based on research in Bangladesh and the UK, the paper attempts to analyse the question of NGO leadership and the difficulties confronting NGOs in developing second-line leaders.
Its objectives are:
1) to look at contemporary theories on leadership and assess to what extent they apply to the specific case of NGOs;
2) to identify the traits of successful NGO leaders in the North and the South
3) to answer the question what hampered or enabled the development of second-line leadership 4) to suggest possible solutions and ways forward.
