This Praxis Note draws from the experiences of 20 Malawian NGO leaders who participated in the Leadership and Management Dynamics programme in 2004. Offered by the South-African consultancy Vision Quest Africa, the programme consists of 2 four-day modules that are offered with 2 - 3 months in between.
Contrary to many leadership development programmes, the Vision Quest approach does not focus on what leaders need to know, but rather on what they need to be. It starts from the assumption that change needs to come from within, and emphasises the importance of leaders challenging themselves, both individually and intellectually. The programme uses the action learning methodology.
Key elements are: developing self-awareness; promoting hope in people; taking a holistic view of leaders; helping people to discover their purpose.
Although the programme was considered relatively expensive (1100 US$ per person for 2 modules), the reactions of the participants were overwhelmingly positive. James' own conclusion is that the Vision Quest approach is a good example of strong capacity building practice.
