CIVICUS, based in Johannesburg, South Africa, is an international alliance established in 1993 to nurture the foundation, growth and protection of citizen action throughout the world, especially in areas where participatory democracy and citizens' freedom of association are threatened. Almost on an annual basis CIVICUS organizes a world assembly on a specific theme. The theme of the meeting which took place on 23-27 May 2007 in Glasgow, Scotland, was on Accountability.
