This paper presents the findings of a joint research programme of CORAT Africa in Kenya, INTRAC in Malawi and the Community Development Resource Network (CDRN) in Uganda on the challenges confronting African civil society leaders.
Based on interviews with 45 NGO leaders, the authors conclude that:
Leaders tend to have hybrid perspectives on leadership
Leaders have little time to learn and reflect, due to the many demands that are placed on them
Women leaders have a particularly hard time, due to cultural expections and family demands
The article offers some concrete suggestions as to how leadership development could be more effective, and explains what this would imply for providers of capacity development services.
